St Andrews Uni 55 - Kinross 18

Saturday saw Kinross suffer another heavy defeat, this time at the hands of St Andrews Uni. There was a new partnership in the second row with Lamont and Smith replacing the injured Wood and Barnett, George Harley replaced Farmer at number 8 after Davy had twisted his knee playing squash earlier in the week. However, unconfirmed reports allege the injury was actually sustained when he saw an ice-cream van and a Tesco delivery van pass in the street and couldn’t decide which one to chase! There were further changes in the back line with Spence returning to inside centre and Rab D’arcy making an appearance at full-back.

Kinross managed to take an early lead on 5 minutes when a Spence penalty went in with the help of an upright. Unfortunately the lead was short lived and St Andrews scored a try two minutes later, a missed tackle on the half-way line from Mackay allowing the opposing winger in for a score in the corner, the conversion was missed. Kinross hit back immediately, pressure from Smith meant St Andrews were unable to secure possession from the restart and the ball somehow found its way to the feet of Carragher who kicked it towards the St Andrews line where an opposing player was subsequently penalised for holding on to the ball. An easy 3 points for Spence saw Kinross restore their lead to. This was to be the last time in the match that Kinross were ahead, St Andrews scoring again on 15 minutes through a backs move from a 5-metre scrum, which was also converted. Kinross managed to close the gap after 20 minutes when Tolson bundled over from a lineout catch, from Lamont, and drive, the conversion was missed but the gap was closed to 12-11. Five minutes later St Andrews scored again, an inside runner off the fly-half resulted in three missed tackles and a converted score. Kinross had an excellent opportunity late in the half, Coll broke the line to feed Spence who made it to the 5-metre line but with options either side he chose to go alone and the move broke down. The students managed to work their way back up the pitch and secured their try bonus with another backs move which came as a result of a lineout in the last play of the half. Half-time score 24-11.

The second half started as the first had ended, with St Andrews in the ascendancy. Within 15 minutes the lead had been extended to 36-11 and Prince had come on in place of Keith Tolson. On 60 minutes St Andrews had a player sin-binned for having his hands in a ruck, rather than accept his guilt he claimed that his yellow card was down to the fact that George Smith was “too old, too slow and a c***”. Kinross managed a converted score two minutes later, Mullan scoring near the posts after good forward work. Three minutes later yet another missed tackle let St Andrews in for another score, the conversion was missed. Kinross had to play the last few minutes with 14 men after an injury to George Harley, another two converted tries were conceded in this period to take the final score to 55-18.
