The annual battle proved more to be a walk in the park for the staff (Kinross former pupils plus some familiar Blairgowrie rival) as they strolled to victory in truly dreadful conditions on Tuesday evening.
As the high school divas who view themselves as “too cool for the club” made their way into the changing rooms claiming it was not their responsibility to put out the post protectors etc and blasting the “Hacka” out of there dressing room like true prima donna’s a small ensemble gathered on the touchline to watch the game of the year.
The early enthusiasm of the pupils soon wore off however and multiple claims of cramp in the first half showed that these laddies were not really keen on putting the effort in that so many of the predecessors from the school once did in this fixture. There was however a couple of stand out performances from the big number 8 and his back row pal no.7 and also from little Rab Kay, who finally hopes to get his standard grades this year and leave school. Rab was also the culprit that sent our great leader Dunk Wood into a rage after beautifully side stepping him in his own try area.
The route started slowly but eventually the staff were unstoppable with trys coming from Lamont who notched up two, Carragher, Wood, Hardie, Spence, Goudie and some one else. There was also a triumphant comeback try for Boofty who showed blistering pace to support a move up the right hand side of the park before eventually being teed up by Dave Mackay 2 yards out and crashing through to touch down. As the prodigal son arose from the mud in celebration and began limping of the field of play it was soon apparent that he may be forced back into retirement for another two years and his attempt to become outside centre next season may not materialize. His brother Muzz looked extremely proud though and was seen with tears in his eyes, it was soon realised however that the youngest Crawford was just pishing himself laughing at his feeble big brother.
As the match approached the closing stages and the ref realised that however many penalties he gave against the staff was going to make no difference to the score line there was several attempts by the “Wee Man” to get himself on the score sheet unfortunately he never quite managed it. There was also a first in the history of the KGV with the brute that is meant to be Andy Caldwell being dumped tackled by a youngster and the returning Chris Devanny suffering the same fait.
All in all a good afternoon of banter, well from the staff side at least, and a lesson in rugby and club culture for the pupils.
