Kinross 3 - St Andrews Uni 41

On the eve of Guy Fawkes Night it was Kinross who showed the early fireworks by taking the game to St Andrews.  This was rewarded when Spenny rocketed over an early penalty, 3-0.  Further good work from Kinross lead to another opportunity to score from a penalty, unfortunately Spence was unlucky enough to hit the post.  Kinross continued to make the sparks fly and have the better of the first half, putting some significant pressure on the Uni boys, however they crucially failed to convert this pressure into points.  On a plus side excellent and well organised defence from Kinross meant that St Andrews could not breach our line.  The closest the Uni boys came to scoring was a dart from close range which was foiled by a good Kinross tackle forcing him to spill the ball.  On 38 minutes the crowds chants of ‘He’s big he’s red, his feet stick out the bed, Gordon Wood, Gordon Wood’ were answered as the ginger one took the field, replacing George Smith.  Kinross ended the half on a high by kicking deep into St Andrews territory.

As any Fire Safety Officer knows, you should never return to the scene of a lit firework, Kinross did and it blew up in their face!

The half started reasonably for Kinross, but there were worrying signs as the St Andrews backs showed their pace.  It was not long before they had the first try of the match under their belts, cutting through the Kinross backline.  They converted to make it 3-7.  Then came one of the low points of the game with 2nd row Barney attempting a long spiral kick to touch.  Needless to say he fluffed it up and handed the possession straight back to the dangerous St Andrews back 3, what a tool!  The rest of the game passed with little highlight for Kinross and unfortunately the 2nd half belonged to St Andrews.  They continued to slice the Kinross defence open and went on to score a further 6 tries in all.

The spirited and well organised defence of the first half fell by the wayside as Kinross’ lack of fitness showed.

There are many things that Kinross need to work on in training after a performance like that, lets hope the coach puts a rocket up their arse before next week!
