Even with an 11:30am kick-off Kinross were able to put in a convincing performance against their well-travelled opponents. The game was a hard fought affair with Kinross having the lion's share of the forward play, driving mauls were key to our success on the day. In the first half Orkneys back line managed to get two well-worked tries although some of the Kinross tackling left a lot to be desired in both these instances. Orkneys third try came when one of their forwards, somehow, managed to drive straight through a ruck and make 20 yards to go over the line. The slack defending of the Kinross team threatened to overshadow some excellent attacking play from both the backs and forwards. The forward tries came from Goudie and Bull, whilst Ross and Stuart Allan crossed the line for the backs/girls. Only one of the four Kinross tries were converted, whilst the opponents converted 2 out of three leaving the tie very close at 20-19 come half time.
The second half was much better defensively for Kinross, with Orkney only managing a solitary penalty in comparison to three tries from Kinross. Two of the Kinross tries came from Allan and Goudie whilst the third went to Fraser Ross, although Ally Wood feels he should have been awarded one prior to this.
It was a convincing win for Kinross, but the most memorable thing from the game may be injury Iain Spence sustained. After a clash of heads with 'Rambo', Spenny was shocked to see his head was badly cut open and pouring with blood. This allegedly led him to ask Olly, the super-medic, "Am I going to die?" This vicious rumour is still steadfastly denied by the man himself, in any case nine stitches and four hours later Spenny was back at work driving heavy vehicles. The perfect way to recover from a serious head knock!
