Friday night the club travelled through to Edinburgh to play a match against Trinity. The game was played over 3 x 30 minute periods and again showed the development and improvement we are making each week.
The first period saw an early attack from Trinity that pinned us back in our 22 for a few minutes but with dogged defence came confidence and then attacking play. The waves of attack eventually were rewarded with a try. Clean lineout ball and drive saw Tolson burst through from 25 yards, allowing for front row exaggeration of +20 yards! The end of the period came too soon as confidence and game play was on high. Kinross winning the period 5-0. A number of changes for the second period, 6 for Kinross and 15 for Trinity changed the complexion. The second period was very much the hosts, with some excellent handling and using the width of the pitch to make possession tell. Trinity took the period 17-0. It might have been different but Kinross were forced into further changes with injury to Neil, Dale and Frankie. The third period with again a whole team swap for Trinity was very evenly contested yet Trinity won the period 10-0. This was predominantly down to the playing of many of the Kinross boys for 60 minutes against opposition that were fresh on. Noted by the referee and the Trinity coach on how well Kinross played.
The work rate was excellent by all and Trinity definitely gave us a contest with areas and passages of play by both sides producing entertaining rugby to watch. Fitness is generally good and many of the moves were tried and proved successful in creating space in the tight.
Players to note were Bull who is making the transition from loose to tight head and looked more comfortable in the role; Red for some great lineout takes and covering tackles; Chris Gleblochi on his debut putting in some great tackles in open play and playing most of the match switching between tight and loose head; Geed ( I need a break from rugby ) Queen for some big hits and now a change of attitude – “I am back”!; Ted for overall work rate and orchestrating the back line; Spenny doing what Spenny does best – in the oppositions face and with exceptional ball handling skills.
Man of the match:- Duncan Wood – Captain and big hitting centre, played 90 minutes and led from the front.
Jaffa Award:- Booboo for 2 dropped passes!
We need to keep the energy, commitment and attitude on high. If we do it will only get better!!
Saturday saw the first competitive game of the season as Kinross hosted Linlithgow from National Division 2. The first point to note was 30 guys turned up to play (with a few unavailable due to work and holiday commitments) and that hopefully is a sign of things to come. The attitude was right, the team spirit was there and the club had a buzz about it!
The game was played over 4 x 20 minute periods and the final score does not reflect the performance, 0 – 49, as the first period saw some spirited defence and 0 – 0 score line, the second period with a near full swap of players went down by 3 tries. The third period saw the original 15 take the field and this time much of the game was played in Linlithgow’s half but neither team broke down a spirited defensive line. The final period was lost by 4 tries to 0 again but with the whole team swapping again it just lacked a bit of continuity.
Some great performances that deserve a mention – Stuart Hunter for his tackle on the Linlithgow centre as he stood between him and the try line; Matt Thomson, Cameron McDonald, Eck Gordon, Daniel Futong and Gordon Robertson for a spirited performance on their first outing for the club; Dale Lamont and Iain Spence for the covering tackles and defensive play, Richard Bruce for some good breaks and attacking options; and finally debutant Tom McIntosh (man of the match) for his overall game play in every 20 minutes some great lineout takes, defensive tackles, support and attacking play.
Some things to work on, but nothing major all the guys should be proud of their efforts!
Linlithgow showed a level of surprise believing Kinross were in national Division 3 and not just surviving relegation last season – based on the overall performance. No complacency and lets up the tempo for the match against Trinity on Friday night.
The squad was, Goudie, Neil, Keith, Dan, Rab, Bull, Tom, Connor, George, Ollie, Jimmy, Andy C, Andy D, Ted, Liam, Stuart, Cameron, Matt, Fraser, Duncan, Richard, Jamie, Kieron, Gav, Gordon, Eck, Jocky, Syd, Spenny and Tom
Finally thanks to Linlithgow for making it a great afternoons rugby.

This game was a build up to the trip to Edinburgh for the golden oldies event in Sept. The Fossils are a select side made up from several clubs much higher in league standings than ourselves. It was a great turn out from the old boy's, fielding no less than 22 players, most of whom have played in over 35s for at least 10 years!!
Kinross held the fossils for the first 20 mins before conceeding the first try followed by another three tries in the first half. With most of the game being played in the middle of the pitch, it was a well contested match.
The second half was much more of a game and the Kinross oldies responded very well to the half time lecture.
The fossils scored five mins into the second half through a break away, but Kinross responded very well and gained possession from the kick off then hit a purple patch with some real good ball retention, The forwards took a nice clean scrum deep in their own half and Ian Roddy shipped it out to the backs, where it reached Jocky who actually caught it and made about ten meters setting the ball up for the pack, well most of them! Just when it was expected that the Kinross boys would suffer from lack of fitness they dug deep and really competed well for the last quarter. Kinross scored a nice try with about ten mins to go from a defensive position in the fossils half When a clearance kick was charged down both Malky and Benjie caught the ball at the same time and, not believing their luck, stood there cuddling for a few seconds before going over the line together, with calls of 'get a room' coming from the side lines.
The match was played in real oldies spirit. This was a credit to both team and the work of referee Mr Ian Davidson who did a great job keeping the match flowing.
