Kinross 29 - 0 RAF Kinloss

 26/04/08

After previous dubious call offs due to “Search and Rescue” missions, the boys from the RAF finally made there way down for this meaningless end of season fixture. The match wasn’t the most entertaining affair but the Kinross boys never looked under any real pressure from start to finish. Two tries from captain on the day Tom Coll and one a piece for Leishman, Ross and Spence who converted 2 out of the 4 to help ensure the Kinross victory. The referee certainly didn’t make it an easy game for the Kinross boys, dishing out countless penalties, giving Dunk Wood a yellow card and threatening to card Gerard for competing against the head. Most importantly though Kinross scored another 3 fantastic tries were but were disallowed, for reasons unknown.

After the match was more entertaining however with a Kinloss player first of all trying to claim that Kinross were relegated, he then changed his story to only one team go down, namely Waid. After much mocking of the “nump” he realised his error and had to go into the changing room and inform his team-mates that they had actually been relegated, which surely put a damper on there bus journey home.

Dunfermline Over 35s Tournament

Saturday saw the old boy's get together for the first time this year to compete in the 18th annual Dunfermline over fourties tourny.
We had a great turnout and it could have been more had some guy's not been poached for the firsts and other had work commitments.
It was a typical day for the Mc Kane park tourny, lashing down.
only five teams taking part, so we had to play four games, it really too it's toll on the old body.
in our first game we played the eventual winner Glenrothes, they had bloody big forwards and the backs were larger.
Our guy's seemed to lose the ability to tackle and before we knew it we were a try down. We put plenty pressure on in the middle part of the game only again to suffer from our poor tackling. Final score  Glenrothes 12  Kinross 0.

Next game was against Dunfermline and we really fancied our chances here having watched them play in the first game against Fife.
It was a well contested game, contrary to the rules of the game they fielded at least 4 guy's who's combined age was less than Jocky.
Again we failed to tackle and they scored in the first half, we replied shortly afer with a try from Colin Henderson, I think he got a knock on the head as when he got the ball he ran in the wrong direction, forward!!!! This try seemed to lift the boy's for a while and we played some good rugby, with things tied at 5 each we were puting pressure on the home side when we again lost a late score.
Final score Dunfermline 12 Kinross 5.

Third game was against Fife southern, again we competed well and this time we scored first through some well worked forwards moves in which every forward must have handled the ball at lest twice. Geordie Smith bulldozed his way over from 12 yards.
Fife replied soon after with a lucky try, but Kinross were clearly the better side, and when Spermy burst through one of the Fife rucks at real pace, puting opponents defence in to panic & making they throw a wild pass that was intreceped by Benjie, he ran 40 metes to score under the posts. Floody stepped up to take the conversion and hit the bar, just like Ronaldo!
The final score Kinross 12 Fife southern 5.

Our last game was against Hamilton who, like Dunfermline, fielded some really young lads but we really thought we where going to win this one.
We scored first through a try from Floody, this time he kicked his conversion, Hamilton scored shortly after through some poor refferee errors (he later admited to being rubbish) Kinross scored a second try. Again it was through our top scorer Benjie, this time he collected the ball on the halfway line and beat three tackles on the way to scoring under the posts, it was again converted.
Believe it or not we scored again to take a five point lead, this time it was Syd who had a run from the 10 meter line and bounced off two tackles. He was brought down but managed to get up and make it to the corner.
Ronaldo again missed the conversion, then the usual happend, we lost two late tries to steal defeat from the jaws of victory!!
Final score Hamilton 19 Kinross 17.

All in all we had a great day as we usually do. What was interesting is that the main body of the squad played when we won the tourny in 1994 and in 1998. Is nobody getting older in Kinoss? or are they just not coming to terms with it?

Next chance to see the old boy's in action will be on the 10th May at the KGV' 1pm kick off.

The Squad... Neil Gibson, Ian McGregor, Jim Handyside, ollie Cox, Colin Henderson, George Smith, Andy Caldwell, Benjie Bonnar,Mark Thomson,
Alan Fraser, Ian Flood, Elton Price, Andy williams, Jocky Penman, Ian Roddy, Pat Carragher,Syd Ney,Rod McRae.

Waid Academy FP 13 - 30 Kinross

22/03/08

Kinross travelled across to Anstruther in search of a much needed victory to help stave off the threat of relegation. Right from the whistle Kinross battered into the home side and strung some good phases of play together. The boot of Spence opened the scoring and gave Kinross a three point lead from a penalty. Minutes later Kinross powered home their first try with Stewart Mullan eventually diving through Barneys legs. To increase the lead, Spence put another two points to his tally by converting. Kinross didn’t slow up there, and after winning good turnover ball George Harley stormed in for Kinross’ second try of the day. Another third followed a good dummy from fullback Richard Bruce which released Jamie Leishman who showed great speed and strength to get over the try line. Waid did, however, hit back with a scrappy try off their own to make the half time score Waid 5 Kinross 20.

Into the second half and Waid, spurred by their late first half try, looked like they were ready to put up more of a fight and managed to score a try in the corner from a quick tap penalty. The tap, however, didn’t leave the scrumhalf’s hands but nearby Waid touch judge failed to spot this much to the dismay of Kinross players and away support. Kinross didn’t let this effect them and they quickly put some more points on the board with Spence kicking his second penalty of the day. Waid then followed that up with a penalty of their own. Kinross secured the win and the bonus point with superb breakaway try from Fraser Ross and Spence converted to take his tally to 10 points for the day. The game then descended into somewhat of a scrappy affair, but Kinross put in a superb defensive display with Booboo dumping his opposite man on more than one occasion and the awesome site of the Harley brothers double teaming a poor boy, which literally left him gasping for air.

A rather poor game by Kinross’ standards unfortunately as they were dragged down to the home teams level for long periods of the game. Waid with there drunk Prop and two yellow cards never looked like seriously causing an upset.

Kinross 0 - 86 Currie RFC

16/02/08

Their effort and enthusiasm was tremendous; they fought like gladiators and tackled like tigers but a brave Kinross fifteen could do little to prevent a rampant Currie team, eager for match practice, from romping to a thirteen try victory.

As the crowd chatted and strolled leisurely in the bright afternoon sunshine from the friendly club- house to the pitch in the pretty King George V playing fields, a roar went up from those spectators already on the touchline; Currie had recorded their first try of the match and Kinross were given an early taste of the task they were up against from a team 75 places above them in the Scottish leagues.

It was with some surprise that the next points came from a Currie penalty kick, but this was clearly  precautionary respect shown by the visitors as they gauged the measure of the big Kinross pack who were not allowing their illustrious counterparts to have things entirely their own way. Kinross were quick to the breakdown and their rucking and mauling ability held up Currie’s progress to the line. The home backs were always under pressure and did splendidly to clear their 22; they were aided by the Kinross forwards who frequently wrestled the ball from Currie control. Eventually experience and superior Currie organisational skills took there toll; a rolling Currie juggernaut careered over the Kinross line for a trade-mark Ross Weston try; the visitors were now firing on all cylinders.

As the half progressed the home team could do little to halt the speed and handling techniques of the Currie backs who rattled in a further four tries to accumulate a healthy lead by the break.

Half time score – Kinross 0 pts, Currie 43 pts

Undaunted, Kinross resumed the fray in typical Scottish rugby spirit; their forwards thundered into Currie territory as if the game had just commenced; their vociferous encouragement was constant and each tried his hardest. This group of dedicated rugby men were clearly playing for pride and as if their lives depended upon the outcome. For long periods they confined play to the middle of the pitch as Currie were made to fight for the possession that their eager back line could utilise. The visitors tried to give their opponents the run-around with some long, loopy passes reminiscent of 7s play, but Kinross would have none of it and were unlucky not to make more of the occasional interception and well worked turnover; even in the final quarter they were able to take a ball against the head as the Currie scrum pressed for a score. However, the visitors’ scoring machine continued to keep the points mounting and by no-side a further seven tries had been recorded.

It takes two teams to make a match and Kinross never gave up the struggle in what may appear to have been a very one-sided affair; if all Scottish teams play with the passion and commitment of Kinross the game can only go from strength to strength. Their front row, with the ‘silver-fox’ and Harley, their big number 8, delivered impressive performances. Currie had not had a match for three weeks and Kinross certainly gave them the competition that a team with aspirations requires to keep all the parts sharp and in good working order. The lady referee (Mhairi Hay) had an excellent game and controlled proceedings with a keen eye and consistent, firm decisions.

Kinross to play Premiership 1 Currie

Following last night hard fought battle against National 3 team Glenrothes, Kinross have secured their place in the 4th round of the Scottish National Cup competition.

The boys will play host to Premiership 1 side Currie on Saturday 16th Feb at King George V playing fields. Kick-off 2pm.

Please come along and watch Kinross in their biggest game in the clubs history.

Gordonians 32 - 0 Kinross

19.01.08

Kinross travelled up north to this game with only one substitute and a squad which included no less than seven 2nd XV regulars. Considering Gordonians were a full 40 points clear of Kinross and odds on favourites for the league title, in many peoples eyes this fixture could have finished up with Kinross taking a heavy beating. However this could not have been further from the truth as right from the off Kinross put up a solid defence and stopped the Gordonian backs from making any inn-roads. Only a disastrous clearance kick from a back row, who didn’t want to be named, allowed an early try to be conceded.

After this the Kinross forwards were battling hard for the remainder of the game hardly ever allowing the Gordonian backs to be released.

Towards the end of the game fitness started to tell and Gordonians were able to add a couple more tries to their lead.

This fact however cannot over shadow the truly excellent manner in which Kinross performed with a gutsy and full hearted display from everyone.

Dunk Wood has promised to practice his kicking at training

Under 30s 58 - 5 Over 30s

29/12/07

Firstly, Happy New Year and all the best to for 2008. The annual Oldies (Over 30s) vs Youngins (Under 30s) match was played on the 29th Dec and even changing the age groups for the match did not give the Oldies the edge they needed and the Youngins made it three victories out of three.

The first 20 minutes saw the Youngins give away the ball through knock-ons, off-sides and holding on the deck – many of which were dubious and some cynical players may think the referee was trying to even up the match even before it had started.  With all the stops in play the young team couldn’t get into their game. Once the ref had eased off a bit the game got under way and the try scoring commenced. In the pack the Oldies had the weight advantage and were scrumming and mauling the young team all over the park, and both sets of backs were going blow for blow. At the break the score was a tight 15 – nil to Under 30s.

Following some port and lager the game kicked off again.Stand-in Captain Tom must have given the young team some strong words at half time cause the  young boys came out and started to play some good rugby. The Oldies pack started to lag and were loosing scrums against the head. With the Oldies subbing off their two centres this gave the young centres chance to break through and get more points on the board. Unfortunately Fraz ‘The Wee Man’ also scored – which we still haven’t heard, and probably will never, hear the end of.

Good luck for the rest of the season lad, lets try to avoid relegation in the 1st XV League, get past Glenrothes into the next round of the cup and keep fielding a 2nd XV.

Thank you to Jonathan Ross for all match photos from 2007

Stirling Uni 38 - 5 Kinross

15/12/07

Kinross travelled to Stirling hoping to put in a good performance against the students and come away with a valuable win. Unfortunately it wasn’t to be. Like so often this season the basics let Kinross down with missed first time tackles and poor handling allowing the students to take full advantage and run in their 38 points. With a break from league duties over the festive period and the all important over 30's Vs under 30's on the 29th of December, lets hope that we can get that all important team spirit back up for the remaining part of the season.

St Andrews Uni 26 - 8 Kinross

08/12/07

Yet again Kinross were plagued with players unavailable for the trip east to St Andrews. With captain Tolson looking after "the boy", gathering troops was left to vice captain Tom Coll - never a easy task. With two debutants in the 1st xv Rab Kay and Eric Gordon, Kinross started well heading up the slope. Early pressure from Kinross led to a penalty which was kicked by Spence, 3- 0 Kinross. St Andrews hit back straight away and some sloppy tackling from Kinross lead to a St Andrews try. Kinross defence stood up well with some crunching tackles on the Kinross try line managing to keep the students out. With Kinross again on the attack a blistering run from booboo set up a driving maul in the students 22. The pack worked well to keep the ball at the back and Harley drop over the line to score. St Andrews managed another score using there quick and organised back line. Half time 14- 8.

With the rain and wind on Kinross’ backs and still in with a shout the second half started once again with the students’ backline in attack, which soon led to a try from the full back. Unfortunately things didn’t improve for Kinross as Barney was knocked out from a tackle. Following a short stoppage, and Barney eventually off the field, the game resumed and again the St Andrews backs pace and coupled with some poor tackling from Kinross saw St Andrews over for the final score of the game. Kinross managed a final assault on the students try line but unfortunately could not turn it into points. All in all there where a lot of positives to be taken from the game there were also negatives - such as Kieron Methven wearing what can only be described as tights!

2nd XV 8 - 66 Forrester 2nd XV

01/12/07

Twos captain Craig Purvis thought Christmas had come early when 26 players turned up for the game against Forresters, considering there was only 10 players turned up for the away fixture earlier in the season. Unbelievably, however, there was only one prop in the ranks so scrums had to be uncontested, nevertheless Kinross played some superb rugby and really tested the league toppers in the forwards. Second Row Rab Kay crossed the line for a Kinross try in the first half and Ian Roddy slotted a penalty early on. Despite some excellent play a lack of Kinross fitness allowed the Forrester backs to get a hold of the game and run in some good points for them. Nevertheless this was a morale victory for Kinross having halved the score line from the last meeting of the two which finished up with Forresters trouncing Kinross 125-0.

Aberdeenshire 48 - 20 Kinross

24/11/07

Kinross travelled to Aberdeen in the knowledge that they have never beaten Aberdeenshire in their previous 3 encounters. Aberdeenshire came out the blocks and scored a quick try. Unfortunately for the Kinross boys this seemed to set the precedence for the match. Kinross played some good defensive rugby and when given chance to open up also showed some good attacking but lacked the consistency to mount a formidable challenge.  Kinross were unlucky not to get the bonus point as that 4th try eluded them in the dying minutes.
