Alloa 7 - Kinross 23

Kinross left Alloa on Saturday with only their third try-bonus of the season thanks to an impressive second half performance. The fashion police were out in force before the match and Ally Wood’s top was the subject of much scrutiny from the majority of the style challenged Kinross players.

After some confusion over the designated kick-off time the match eventually began at 2.20. Kinross received the kick-off and immediately went on the attack. The first five minutes could have seen Kinross three tries up but handling errors and failure to retain the ball at rucks and malls meant all they had to show for their endeavours was a solitary Spence penalty. Kinross did manage a try after roughly 15 minutes through Keith Tolson; a forage into the Alloa 22 saw the ball spun out to the left where it was eventually collected by Tolson who barged over for the score. The wind was making kicking difficult and the conversion was missed. The tempo of the game dropped noticeably after this and Kinross allowed Alloa back into the game, Alloa eventually managed a score in the left corner, which was also converted. Half time score 7-8.

The second half saw Kinross up their game with a three try haul courtesy of Coll (2) and D. Wood. Interestingly all three scores came whilst Barnet was off with a slight knock to the knee, perhaps the Wood/Smith second row partnership could be the key for a successful run in? Any opinions on this are welcome in the guestbook! Coll’s first try came in the left corner after he had broken a number of tackles. His second came when the Alloa player, under pressure from A. Wood, failed to clear his lines convincingly. Coll collected the ball on the 22 and after building up a head of steam the Alloa defence were unable to stop him going over the line again. After this Duncan Wood was brought on for Miles at blindside flanker. The fourth and final try of the day was probably the most impressive. Tees fed the fresh legs of D. Wood on the half way line who headed straight for the touchline where after a neat exchange with Mackay he ran in for what he described as the best try of his career so far. With the bonus point secured Barnet and Queen were brought on for Wood and Harley respectively. The final ten minutes were played out with no real incident and Kinross returned from an away match with the full 5 points for the first time this season. Final score 7 – 23.

For one team member the highlight of the day was still to come, after announcing his dislike for beans he was permitted by the Alloa catering staff to have two pies instead. This story was relayed to anyone who would listen with the moral being “if you don’t ask you don’t get” and I think I speak for us all when I say, well done Davy Farmer!

Kinross now have the next two Saturday’s free from league duty before the visit of league leaders Strathmore. However, Stuart is looking for friendly games to fill the void so good numbers at training are still required.
